JOE RYAN

Mr Joe Ryan (Assistant Headteacher – Student Experience)

My role as Assistant Headteacher for Student Experience has Careers and Enterprise as one of my most important roles. We are ambitious for the outcomes of every single student and are working hard to ensure they achieve their chosen pathway into education, employment and training.

My background in STEM has always been closely linked with careers – I was one of the founding members of the Centre of Excellence for Science, Environment and Technology (CE:SET) and also started our highly successful Designing the Built Environment course; both these provisions integrated with well-known businesses such as NG Bailey, AWM Waste Management, Yorkshire Water, British Gas and now Birkbeck Structures. To date, I have led two trips to CERN in Geneva to visit the home of particle physics and explore careers there at the cutting edge of science.

Personally, I am also thoughtful about our disadvantaged groups and have driven the STEM agenda to recruit and encourage girls into these sectors, being especially proud of my own daughter now studying a masters in sustainable engineering  . Aspirations have also been a huge driver behind our academies as they offer our talented students experiences well beyond the classroom. I believe that all students require a unique range of skills and qualities, both to prepare them for the future and to embrace technology, which is becoming increasingly prevalent in all aspects of our lives; my knowledge of this sector being enhanced by having gained a Master’s Degree in Education, Multimedia and Technology. There are many careers out there waiting to be invented and discovered!

DESTINATIONS

BBEC provides first-rate careers education, information and guidance (CEIAG) to ensure our students can make informed choices about the next steps in their career journeys. In 2024, at the completion of Year 11 there were 291 students who progressed to the wide range of providers and employers across West Yorkshire. The chart below shows the breakdown of types of destinations:

The majority of our students chose Colleges, to access a wide range of Level 3 Academic Courses, T-Levels and Diplomas as well as more vocational-based Level 2 and 1 courses. We have a remarkable number of students taking up Apprenticeships and Training at 10%, whereas the Bradford average is only 2.4%. This shows the strength of our Provider Access Policy and ensuring all students have fair access to every possible destination and provider.

Our Total NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) and Not Known is 9 students (3.8% of the cohort) and Careers@BBEC was clearly successful to so many students facing challenges and empowering them to avoid this disappointing outcome. The NEET average over the past 5 years for All Bradford Schools has been 5.2% and All England at 4.3%, so once again we have performed extremely well against these wider contents.

Eventually, many of our students progress to University and other Level 4 pathways. One good example of this is the 96 students who went to New College Bradford in 2022, 2023 and 2024, with an impressive 73 of them progressing to university: indeed, only 4 other schools in Bradford send more students to this leading provider of A-level and other Level 3 courses.

Careers@BBEC is always available and please contact Mr. Ryan for further information.
